How-to guides

Start a conversation your way

The New conversation button has a menu behind it. Start from a document, open a blank document, hand a task to an agent, or make a new project, from Home or from the left rail on any screen.

Most of the time you want a blank conversation and you want it now. Sometimes you already have the thing you want to talk about: a PDF, a contract, a draft, a task that an agent should just go and do. GPTree keeps both a click away, behind the same button.

The button

The same action lives in two places. On Home it is the "Start" button in the start bar at the top of the page. On every screen it is the "+" at the top of the left rail, labelled "New conversation". Click either and you get a fresh, empty conversation, titled "New Conversation" until it earns a real name.

On Home you can also type first. Put what you are working on into the start bar and press "Start", and that text goes in as your first message, so you are not starting from a blank box. Click into the bar and the rest of the message controls appear, the same ones a conversation has: pick the model and the persona, attach files, turn on web search, "Add Context", or "Explore multiple" to put the question to several models at once. Whatever you set carries into the new conversation. A few suggested starting points sit under the bar if you would rather tap one.

Next to the button is a small arrow (on the rail, a slim strip under the "+" labelled "More ways to start"). That opens the Start menu.

The Start menu

  • From a document. Upload a file and start a conversation about it. You pick the file, give it a title, and can add it to a project or leave it out of one. The conversation opens with the document attached, so the first thing you ask is about the document, not about how to get it in.
  • New document. A blank document, not in a project, opened for editing. Use it when the deliverable is the point and the conversation is in service of it; branches can merge their best content into it later.
  • Hand to an agent. On plans that include agents (Pro and Team, and trials of them), this opens your agents' work board with a new task form, so "go and do this" skips the conversation entirely.
  • New project. The same project dialog you get on the Projects page: a name, a description, and an optional parent.

Items your plan does not include simply do not appear, so the menu is short by design.

Where the conversation lands

A conversation started from Home, or from the rail while you are outside a project, begins under "Not in a project", which is fine for a quick question. Start it while you are inside a project (the "+" on that project's pages) and it lands in that project. If a project-less conversation grows into real work, the project switcher in the conversation header moves it, with all its branches, into a project later.

On a phone

The drawer's New tile opens the same menu as a sheet from the bottom of the screen, with "New conversation" as its first row and the other ways to start underneath.

Why not just one button

Because the first thirty seconds set the shape of the work. A conversation that starts with the document attached and the project's instructions already loaded is briefed before you type; the one you start blank and paste into is not. The menu exists so the briefed start is as quick as the blank one.
