You subscribe
Any paid plan. From that month on, one tree gets funded in your name for as long as you stay with us.
Every month, for every person paying for GPTree, we fund one real tree. Not once when you sign up. Every month you stay. Refer someone who subscribes and we plant another one for you on top. Nothing to click, nothing to opt into, no extra cost to you.

If a person you referred subscribes, we plant an extra tree for you on top of your monthly one. Their own monthly tree starts too.
A year on a paid plan is twelve trees, before any referrals. It keeps counting for as long as you are here, which is the part we like most about it.
We fund it through Greenspark, who vet and run the reforestation projects. We do not plant them ourselves and we are not going to imply otherwise.
Plenty of products promise a tree for every signup. We do not, for one plain reason: a signup is not a person.
Any product with an open registration form collects waves of automated signups. Attaching a real environmental commitment to a number a script can inflate makes the number meaningless, and a meaningless number is worse than none at all. Someone paying for a subscription is a real person making a real decision, so that is what we count.
Monthly rather than once, because a one-off tree at signup rewards the wrong thing. This way the number reflects how long people actually stay, which is the honest measure of whether we built something worth keeping.
Referrals work the same way. Recommend GPTree to someone, and when they subscribe we plant an extra tree for you as well as starting their own monthly one. It is the only bonus we pay on an ongoing basis, and we pay it in trees rather than cash for the reasons below.
GPTree exists on the premise that an answer should carry its evidence. It would be strange to run this page on vibes.

If a measured, audited carbon offset is what you need, buy one from an organisation that sells them and can show you the methodology. This is a different and more modest thing, and we would rather describe it accurately than sell it hard.
We looked at paying cash for referrals. Cash gets farmed, it turns a recommendation into a transaction, and nobody has ever told a friend about a product because there was a dollar in it.
A tree costs us about the same. It cannot be gamed, it does not cheapen the recommendation, and it is the one part of GPTree you can go and stand next to.
