How-to guides
Sign in to the desktop app
The GPTree desktop app signs in with Google, Apple, or your email and password. Google opens in your browser and hands you back to the app. Here is what each step looks like, and what to do if it stalls.
The desktop app uses the same GPTree account as the web app. Open the app and you get the same sign-in screen, "Sign in to GPTree", with the same choices: Google, Apple, or your email and password. Whichever you use on the web is the one to use here.
Sign in with Google
- Click Continue with Google.
- Your normal browser opens on Google's sign-in page. The app waits, and shows "Finish signing in in your browser, then come back here."
- Choose your Google account in the browser.
- The browser shows a page that says You're signed in and hands you back to GPTree. Your browser may ask whether it is allowed to open GPTree. Say yes.
- You are in. Close the browser tab.
Why the browser? Google does not allow its sign-in to run inside an app's own window, so every desktop app that offers Google sign-in sends you to the browser for that one step.
If the app does not come forward by itself after step 4, click Open GPTree on the "You're signed in" page.
Sign in with Apple
If your copy of the app shows Continue with Apple, click it. The Mac's own Sign in with Apple window appears over GPTree. Confirm with Touch ID or your Mac password, and you are in. Nothing opens in the browser.
Not every version of the desktop app offers Apple sign-in. If the button is not there, sign in with Google or with your email and password instead.
Sign in with email and password
Type your email and password and click Sign in, exactly as on the web. "Forgot your password?" is under the password box.
New to GPTree?
Click Create an account on the sign-in screen. The same buttons are there, and they create your account and sign you in in one step.
Where you land
The same place you would on the web: the conversation you last touched, or a new conversation if you have none yet. If the app sent you to sign in from a particular page, you go back to that page.
If something stalls
The browser says "You're signed in" but the app has not changed. Click Open GPTree on that page. If you already closed the tab, go back to the app and click Continue with Google again.
You took a while and now it says the sign-in could not be completed. The handoff from the browser to the app only lasts a couple of minutes. Click Continue with Google again. You are usually still signed in to Google in the browser, so the second pass takes a moment.
"This email already has a GPTree account." You first signed up with an email and password, so Google is not yet connected to that account. Sign in with your password instead.
You cancelled in the browser. The app says "Google sign-in was cancelled." and you can simply try again.
You closed the Apple window. Nothing happens, by design. Click Continue with Apple again when you are ready.
Once you are in, the app keeps you signed in between launches. To use a different account, choose Logout in the menu behind your avatar and sign in again.
