Getting started
Import your ChatGPT history into GPTree
Install the Chrome extension, open a ChatGPT conversation, and one click brings it into GPTree ready to branch. Setup takes about two minutes.
Your old ChatGPT conversations don't have to stay where they are. GPTree's Chrome extension puts a button right inside ChatGPT that imports a conversation into GPTree, where you can branch it and take it somewhere new while the original stays safely in place.
If you're switching over, this is the gentlest way to start: you don't begin from a blank page, you begin from work you've already done.
Set up the extension (once)
-
In Chrome, install "GPTree - Branch, Compare, Merge" from the Chrome Web Store. https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/gptree-branch-compare-mer/nailcemhpkhjfbbpckjdckjggdgknfld
-
Sign in with Google. That connects the extension to your GPTree account.
If you don't have a GPTree account yet, create one first; the Free plan covers importing and branching, and it doesn't ask for a card.
Import a conversation
- Open ChatGPT in Chrome and go to a conversation you want to keep working on.
- Find the "Branch in GPTree" button the extension has added inside ChatGPT.
- Click it. That one click imports the conversation.
The conversation appears in GPTree with its back-and-forth intact, ready to branch like anything you'd started there natively. Your original stays in ChatGPT, untouched; this is a copy, not a move.
Which conversations to bring over
The ones that aren't finished. Almost everybody has a ChatGPT thread that was going well until one question sent it sideways, and now the good version lives fifteen messages up with no way back to it. Import that one. Hover the last reply you actually liked, click the Branch icon on it, and continue from there as if the wrong turn never happened. That single move is the reason importing exists.
There's a guided tour inside GPTree for importing ChatGPT history, if you'd rather be walked through it on screen than follow steps from a page.
Two honest limitations. First, this runs on a Chrome extension, so you'll need Chrome for the importing part (once a conversation is in GPTree, it's in GPTree, and you can work with it anywhere you use GPTree). Second, it's one conversation per click, not a bulk migration. If you have three years of history, resist the urge to bring all of it over; import the handful you're still thinking about and let the dormant ones lie. A chat you haven't reopened since spring wasn't going to improve by moving house.
Your next step: install the extension, open the one ChatGPT conversation you most wish had gone differently, and click "Branch in GPTree".
