How to create an agent
Set up an agent with a name, a role, and a persona, then chat with it in its own pane like a teammate. Its questions and approvals land in your inbox.
An agent pairs a persona (its brain) with a role and a place in your company. Creating one takes about a minute once you're on the right screen, and the right screen is easy to miss, so here's the exact path first.
Finding the Agents screens
- Click "Agents" in the left rail, the narrow column of icons down the left of every signed-in screen (on a phone it is a tile in the drawer behind the menu button). If the entry shows a small lock, you're on the Free plan: agents come with Pro and Team, and the lock takes you to the upgrade page instead of the agents area.
- That lands you on the Agents Overview. With no agents yet it offers two ways in: "Start from scratch" and the Startup company template.
- Click "New agent" (top right), or "Create an agent" on the Start from scratch card. Both open the same form.
Creating the agent
- Name it. A human name works well ("Eva Stratton" is the one in our examples), because you'll be addressing it in chat and "Eva, what did you find" beats talking to an untitled box.
- Add a Role title if you want one: CEO, Engineer, Researcher, whatever slot it fills. This part's optional.
- Give it a Persona. Write one yourself if you know exactly the brain you want, or use "Design one with AI". The persona is what drives how the agent thinks, so this is the step worth slowing down for.
That's the whole creation. The agent gets its own pane, and you talk to it the way you'd talk to a colleague: ask it things, hand it work, push back on its answers.
A shortcut worth knowing: the template on the empty Agents Overview can stand up a whole company in one click. The Startup company template creates a CEO with a CMO, CFO, and CTO, plus an engineer and code reviewer, with starter routines already scheduled. Fun for exploring the org chart; for real work we'd still start with one agent you configure yourself.
Where the agent fits afterward
Once you have agents, the Agents Overview shows what needs you, who is working now, and what recently finished, and the panel beside it lists the sections (Needs you, Work, Team, Artifacts, Decisions, Meetings) and each of your agents. Open any agent from the panel or from Team, the org chart, and its page carries the rest:
- The Routines drawer makes it run automatically on a schedule or trigger (see "How to put an agent on a schedule" when you're ready for that).
- The Skills drawer holds multi-step pipelines the agent can run.
- Runs and Activity show what it actually did, and the Decisions view (under Agents in the sidebar area) keeps an audited record of every explicit decision your agents have made, with conflicts flagged for you to reconcile.
- Needs you collects everything agents need from you, oldest first: questions to answer, actions to approve, and things they can't do on their own.
That last one is the honest limit worth knowing before you start: an agent won't push a decision past you. Write actions wait for your approval, and when two agents reach different conclusions, the conflict lands in your inbox and you pick the one that stands. We built it that way deliberately. Agents do the legwork; you stay the judge.
